1) What does Speak Up Press publish?

    Speak Up Online features the fiction, nonfiction, and poetry of teens 13-19 years old. See Submissions for details on how to submit your work.

2) What do I need to know about Speak Up Online?

  • Speak Up Online only accepts work from teens (13-19 years old).
  • Speak Up Online accepts fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Although we will accept submissions up to 2500 words, most short stories in Speak Up Online are 4-5 pages (1000-1250 words). We have no specific guidelines for content. Speak Up Online strives to be the authentic voice of teens.
  • Follow the Speak Up Online submission guidelines carefully.
  • You don’t have to be enrolled in school. Speak Up Online accepts submissions from all teens.
  • Speak Up Press’s Teen Advisory Board members guide Speak Up Press in its mission to support adolescent literacy and give a voice to teens. Any interested teens should email Speak Up Press (info@speakuppress.org) and ask for a teen advisory board application.
  • Speak Up Online is published online quarterly.
  • Speak Up Online has no limit on the number of pieces you can submit, but we encourage you to send your best work and suggest sending no more than 3 pieces.
  • There are no fees to submit.
  • We will notify you as soon as possible to let you know whether or not your work is chosen, usually not more than six months.
  • There is no payment for work published online.
  • Speak Up Online is free.

4) What do I need to know about publishing book length nonfiction?

  • Speak Up Press publishes YOUNG ADULT NONFICTION ONLY.
  • Follow book length submission guidelines carefully.
  • Writers of book length submissions may be any age.
  • Query only
  • Queries accepted at any time.
  • There are no reading fees.
  • Speak Up Press plans to publish one or two titles a year.
  • Speak Up Press editors will let you know if they want to see the entire manuscript. Do not contact us.
